The ancient Egyptians built pyramids as tombs for the Pharaohs and their queens. The pharaohs were buried in pyramids of many different shapes and sizes.

Probably the most famous Pyramids are at Giza. Some believe that his pyramid at Giza was built by slaves but this is not true. One hundred thousand people worked on it for three months of each year. This was the time of the Nile’s annual flood which made it impossible to farm the land and most of the population was unemployed.

Many ancient civilizations believed in life after death. We identify mumification with ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians - during the time of the dynasties - believed that mummification would guarantee the soul passage into the next life.

Some believed that the dead lived on in the tomb. While others thought of the dead as having gone to a blessed afterworld in some far-distant place. That being the case they provided for both worlds. In no other civilization have such elaborate preparations for the afterlife been made in the preservation of the dead.

Black Egyptian Tutankhamun Mask Statue (issue #1)

Tutankhamun Mask Small.

When they discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun they found a solid gold mask on the king’s mummified body. It was the most magnificent treasure to emerge from King Tutankhamen’s Tomb. Made of beaten and burnished gold it was placed on top of the King’s head and shoulders over the linen wrappings of his mummified body.

Golden Bast Holding Sistrum

Each Golden Bast is made from resin, finished in gold paint with coloured highlighted details, the Bast is stood on a hieroglyph inscribed base.

The Goddess Bast is often depicted holding a sistrum, symbolizing her role as a goddess of dance, joy and festivity. A sistrum is a musical instrument, associated with ancient Egypt and was used in religious ceremonies. A percussion instrument, the sistrum created a range of sound from tinkling to a loud jangling.

Egyptian Sarcophagus

Sarcophagus Small.

A sarcophagus is a stone coffin. Scholars believe that early limestone coffins had the properties to dissolve the body quickly hence the translation of sarcophagus to "flesh eater." The earliest stone coffins in use among the Egyptians of the 3rd Dynasty were designed to represent palaces of mud brick architecture with an ornamental arrangement of false doors and windows.

Each Egyptian Statue is made from resin and is finished in a rich chesnut colour which is enhanced further with soft bronze and gold finishing. It gives the pieces a soft pearlescent sheen in the light.

Small Tutankhamun Mask

Tutankhamun Mask Small.

Found on the king’s mummified body the gold mask was the most famous treasure to emerge from his tomb. The cobra and vulture on the headdress are symbols of his dominance over upper and lower Egypt. The false beard of divinity attached to the chin is that of Osiris ruler of the netherworld. Engravings on back comprise a spell from the Book of the Dead. The original mask was of gold inlaid with various precious stones and glass.

Obilisk

Cleopatras Needle.

Cleopatra’s Needle is located on the Thames Embankment in London close to the Embankment underground station. The Obelisk was actually constructed for Tuthmose III and is carved with Hieroglyphics praising Tuthmose and commemorating his third sed festival. Later inscriptions were added by Ramesses II to commemorate his victories.

When Horus was a baby his father Osiris was killed by Seth. Horus and his mother Isis hid in the papyrus reeds in the delta of the Nile until Horus grew up. When he was old enough he went to war with Seth to get his father’s crown and kingdom.

In the battle Seth managed to blind Horus by taking out his eye and tearing it to bits but Thoth the God of Wisdom managed to heal the eye. Eventually Horus won the war and Seth was driven out into the Sahara Desert.

Bastet was the proctress of cats. The Ancient Egyptians had a great respect for cats since they protected the grain from mice and rats. Killing a cat was punishable by death. When a cat died the family mourned it shaving their eyebrows to mark their sadness. Cats were sometimes mummified like people and their mummies have been found.

Tutankhamun Bust Large

Tutankhamun (King Tut).

The most famous of all the kings found in the Valley of the Kings was Tutankhamun also known as KingTut. He died in mid-January 1343 B.C. It is thought that he was murdered by an official because his skull was bashed in and only a person of great importance could get near enough to harm him.

He is so famous because his tomb was in almost perfect condition. His tomb had been robbed once very soon after he was put in but everything lost was replaced as soon as possible.

Anubis, was the God the Ancient Egyptians believed, would protect the dead on their journey to the afterlife. He was usually portrayed as a human with a Jackal's Head, or in full jackal form wearing a ribbon round his neck. The black colour of Anubis is representative of rotting flesh and the black soil of the Nile Valley, symbolizing rebirth.
